Freeplane, developed by Dimitry Polivaev, is a versatile and powerful mind mapping and knowledge management software designed to help users organize and visualize information in a structured manner. Whether you are a student, educator, project manager, or creative professional, Freeplane offers a robust set of features that cater to a wide range of needs, making it an indispensable tool for brainstorming, planning, and problem-solving.

At its core, Freeplane allows users to create dynamic mind maps that can capture ideas, tasks, and complex relationships in a visually engaging format. The software supports a variety of node types, including text, images, and hyperlinks, enabling users to build rich, interconnected maps that can be easily navigated and expanded. The intuitive drag-and-drop interface ensures that even beginners can quickly get up to speed, while advanced users will appreciate the extensive customization options available.

One of Freeplane's standout features is its scripting capability, which allows users to automate repetitive tasks and extend the software's functionality through custom scripts. This makes Freeplane not only a tool for organizing thoughts but also a platform for developing tailored solutions to specific problems. Additionally, the software supports various export formats, including PDF, HTML, and image files, making it easy to share your mind maps with others or integrate them into other projects.

Collaboration is another area where Freeplane excels. The software supports real-time collaboration, allowing multiple users to work on the same mind map simultaneously. This feature is particularly useful for team projects, remote work, and educational settings where collective input and brainstorming are essential.

Freeplane also offers a range of advanced features such as filtering, search functionality, and task management tools. Users can set priorities, deadlines, and progress indicators for individual nodes, transforming mind maps into effective project management tools. The software's ability to handle large and complex maps without compromising performance is a testament to its robust design and efficient algorithms.

Security is a key consideration for any knowledge management tool, and Freeplane does not disappoint. The software includes encryption options to protect sensitive information, ensuring that your data remains secure whether it is stored locally or shared with collaborators.

In terms of compatibility, Freeplane is a cross-platform application, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. This ensures that users can access their mind maps and knowledge bases regardless of their preferred operating system. The software is also open-source, which means it is continuously improved by a community of developers and users who contribute to its development and refinement.

In conclusion, Freeplane by Dimitry Polivaev is a comprehensive and flexible mind mapping tool that caters to a wide range of users and use cases. Its combination of ease of use, powerful features, and collaborative capabilities make it an excellent choice for anyone looking to enhance their productivity and organization. Whether you are mapping out a complex project, brainstorming new ideas, or managing a wealth of information, Freeplane provides the tools you need to succeed.

Review: I have used Freeplane for years, and have very few issues with it. The software is capable of much more than just mind mapping or brainstorming.
Running it on Windows XP, Vista, Seven and 10 Technical Preview 9860 thru10074 with no problems. I have tried many similar software and find Freeplane does the job and does it very well. Take your time to learn its capabilities, via many video tutorials and on the website forum. You will see that Freeplane ranks high even among the commercial software out there.

Review: I've been happily using this program on my previous (32bit) computer on Windows and Linux without a hitch. Now on a 64 bit system, a normal installation doesn't work but downloading the zip version, extracting and running the .bat file works. Hope this issue is solved soon.
